This is a true off-the-beaten-path mountain journey, riding steady, well-trained mules along remote trails that climb and descend rugged terrain to reach ancient pictograph sites and isolated ranch lands. At times the paths are narrow or exposed, and days include mounting, dismounting, and hiking on rocky, unmaintained trails or through boulder-strewn arroyos, so a comfort with heights, prior riding familiarity, and a moderate level of fitness are important. Supported by skilled vaqueros and grounded in the quiet beauty of desert mountains and star-filled backcountry camps, the experience can be challenging in moments  and deeply peaceful and rewarding throughout.
